Concrete
Chess Game.
Critical Design.

Checkmate is an abstract chess game made of concrete. The board and the pieces, with their simple and edgy form, symbolize the urban skyline of our modern cities.

All pieces are similar in shape and colour and vary only in the different design of the symbols. The figures represent the monotonous architecture of big cities.

The pieces are the same height except for the pawns, which creates an uniform elevation of the two starting lines. In addition, the number of lines shows the value of the individual pieces.

Together with Páris Kröniger-Schmidt, I worked on a University challenge to redesign a the chess game including a social conflict. Our first goal was the design of the game board. We chose the conflict of urbanisation and globalisation. The criticism is that all modern cities with their architecture all look the same and there is no room for individuality. We wanted to make the game of chess unconventional by designing the game pieces in such a way that at first sight there are no differences between the pieces.
